Outbreak of avian influenza in Farsleben

    Caging of poultry ordered, restricted area and surveillance area established / Outbreak of avian influenza in Farsleben officially detected

    An outbreak of classical avian influenza has been officially confirmed in a poultry flock in the district of Farsleben (City of Wolmirstedt). To protect against avian influenza, the Börde district today (December 5, 2022) issued a general animal health order.

    The general decree signed by District Administrator Martin Stichnoth refers to the officially established facts of the outbreak of avian influenza in the district of Farsleben (City of Wolmirstedt).

    Restricted Area:
    The restricted area includes the villages of Wolmirstedt, Elbeu, Mose and Farsleben (city of Womirstedt) as well as the villages of Zielitz including Schricke. Section 21 of the Avian Influenza Ordinance defines the rules of conduct in the restricted zone (see excerpt below).

    Observation Area:
    An observation area is established around the restricted area. Section 27 of the Avian Influenza Ordinance defines the rules of conduct in the observation area (see excerpt below).

    Located in the observation area:

    • in the town of Wolmirstedt the village of Glindenberg
    • in the municipality of Elbe-Heide the villages of Angern, Colbitz, Lindhorst, Loitsche, Heinrichsberg and Rogätz
    • in the unified municipality Niedere Börde the localities Samswegen, Meseberg, Jersleben and Groß Ammensleben
    • in the unified municipality of Barleben the localities of Barleben and Meitzendorf

    Avian influenza is a highly contagious viral disease. Many other birds are also susceptible. For humans, experts say, there is no danger.

    For the places in the restricted zone and in the observation area is ordered the stabling of kept poultry and captive birds of other species. Hunting of feathered game is prohibited.


    Rules of conduct for the restricted area in accordance with § 21 Avian Influenza Ordinance

    Keepers of animals in the restricted zone shall immediately notify the competent authority of the number of birds kept, indicating their type of use, the location and the number of birds kept that have died, as well as any change. Kept birds, mammals, poultry and game bird meat, eggs, and other products and animal by-products derived from poultry and game birds may not be moved into or out of a flock. Feed shall not be moved from a herd.

    The animal owner shall ensure that:

    • the entrances and exits to the sheds or other locations of the poultry are secured against unauthorized access or driving,
    • the poultry houses or other locations of the poultry are only entered by persons from outside the company wearing the company’s own protective clothing or disposable clothing and that these persons remove the protective clothing or disposable clothing immediately after leaving the poultry house or other location of the poultry,
    • protective clothing is cleaned and disinfected immediately after use and disposable clothing is disposed of harmlessly immediately after use,
    • after each housing or removal of poultry, the equipment used for this purpose and the loading area are cleaned and disinfected, and that after each removal the vacated houses, including the equipment and objects present there, are cleaned and disinfected,
    • company-owned vehicles in deviation from § 17 para. 1 of the Livestock Traffic Ordinance must be cleaned and disinfected immediately after the completion of a poultry transport in a paved area,
    • Vehicles, machines and other equipment used in poultry farming and shared by several farms must be cleaned and disinfected in each case in the delivering farm before delivery,
    • proper rodent control is carried out and records are kept,
    • the room, container or other facilities for storing dead poultry are cleaned and disinfected as necessary, but at least once a month,
    • an operational facility for washing hands and a facility for disinfecting shoes is provided.

    The transport of fresh meat of poultry from a slaughterhouse, cutting plant or cold store is prohibited.

    Birds kept to augment the wild bird population may not be released.

    No birds, eggs, or carcasses of birds kept shall be transported on any public or private road or highway, except on farm roads.

    The holding of poultry shows, poultry markets or events of a similar nature is prohibited.

    Transport vehicles and containers that have been used to transport kept birds, fresh meat of poultry, animal by-products from poultry, feed and other materials that may be carriers of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, as well as vehicles that have been used to enter a flock containing kept birds, shall be cleaned and disinfected immediately after each transport operation as further instructed by the competent authority.


    Rules of conduct for the observation area in accordance with § 27 Avian Influenza Ordinance

    Kept birds, fresh meat from poultry and feathered game, eggs and other products derived from poultry and feathered game, and animal by-products from poultry may not be moved into or out of a flock.

    The animal owner shall ensure that:

    • the sheds or other locations of the poultry are only entered by persons from outside the establishment wearing the establishment’s own protective clothing or disposable clothing and that these persons remove the protective or disposable clothing immediately after leaving the sheds or other locations of the poultry,
    • protective clothing is cleaned and disinfected immediately after use and disposable clothing is disposed of harmlessly immediately after use.

    Birds kept to augment the wild bird population may not be released.
