Funding for landscape conservation

Former allotment gardens are being transformed into a near-natural green space

The town of Wolmirstedt has received funding from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) in accordance with the guidelines for the promotion of nature conservation and landscape management projects. Approximately EUR 79,400 will go towards the conversion of allotment gardens into a near-natural green space in the immediate vicinity of the “Untere Ohre” flora and fauna habitat area (FFH).

This affects former allotment gardens located behind the Amtstorbrücke bridge right next to the River Ohre. A dilapidated garage and five gazebos are now to be removed as part of the funding project. They are located in the immediate vicinity of the FFH area “Untere Ohre” in the landscape conservation area “Ohre- und Elbniederung”.

The gardens are to be converted into a near-natural, species-rich semi-open green space with succession to floodplain forest. This should contribute to the sustainable development of the habitat of native wild animal and plant species in the vicinity of the town of Wolmirstedt. A species-rich meadow is to be created from a seed mixture of native origin, and valuable cultural biotopes are to be revitalized and restored. The town is receiving expert support from NABU Barleben e.V..

Once the project is complete, a park-like semi-open area will be created, which will be flooded by the Ohre water during medium to high floods. Work will begin in the spring and be completed in the fall.
