Stadium construction in Wolmirstedt

Now the archaeologists are digging for treasures

The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the new stadium to be built in Wolmirstedt took place just over a month ago – on May 22. A lot has happened since then. The former pitch now looks like a lot of work.

The topsoil was removed to a thickness of 40 centimetres and piled up to form a mound. It may look as if this mound of earth will later form the stands of the stadium. But it simply serves as a temporary ground storage area. The actual construction of the stadium has not yet begun. Archaeologists are currently working on the site.

“We’ve been here for a month now and have already found quite a lot,” says excavation manager Juliane Huthmann from the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archaeology. There are several traces of a late Bronze Age settlement with typical settlement pits, explains the archaeologist. She and her hard-working excavation team can be found on the site every day. For example, they find shards of large storage vessels or cups, and two ovens have also been among the finds.

The archaeologists will be digging through certain areas of the future stadium site until mid-October. They are not working on the entire area, but only parts that have been assessed as particularly productive following preliminary investigations. At the same time, terracing work is taking place, which is scheduled to last until the end of 2025.

The construction of the stadium, a multifunctional sports facility with a large playing field, type B pitch and functional building, is the largest investment project in Wolmirstedt since 1990. As things stand, the construction project will cost around 10.5 million euros. Around 4.3 million euros of this will be financed by subsidies from the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Construction of the sports ground will start in March 2026. According to the current planning status, the functional building will be built from July 2026. Construction is expected to be completed in August 2027. According to current planning, the stadium is scheduled to be inaugurated on September 4, 2027.
