The oak processionary moth was found on the outskirts of the Wolmirstedt district of Farsleben. Initially, an infestation of the animals was detected on three trees in a small, urban wooded area directly adjacent to the public “Am Wald” playground.
However, the employees of the city administration were unable to determine the extent to which the infestation may be even greater. A specialist company was therefore commissioned to carry out an inventory on Monday, July 14. Joint measures will then be agreed with the town of Wolmirstedt.
The affected area of the forest was initially cordoned off and marked with warning signs. Citizens are asked to avoid the area.
The tiny stinging hairs of the caterpillars of the oak processionary moth can cause severe allergic reactions in humans if they come into contact with the skin. Such reactions have also been observed in animals, which is why dog owners are also asked to exercise caution.
