Adelheid and Rüdiger Schulz celebrate their golden wedding anniversary

Rüdiger Schulz comes from Elbingerode in the Harz Mountains, his wife Adelheid from Wolmirstedt. The fact that they were both able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this year was obviously the result of fate. The couple had to meet twice before they fell in love.

“The first time was in 1974, when I was still studying in Dresden and went for a meal in a restaurant,” recalls Rüdiger Schulz. A few tables away sat Adelheid Schulz, who was on vacation in Dresden with a friend. They exchanged intense glances, but nothing more happened. Almost a year later, the young people had another chance to get to know each other. Rüdiger Schulz went for a stroll in Wernigerode and stopped off again at a restaurant, the Hotel “Zur Post”. “It was full, only one seat left. And it was at her table, of all places,” he says. The two of them talked, knew that they had met before – and fell in love.

Rüdiger Schulz, who worked in vehicle maintenance, eventually moved to Wolmirstedt. The long-planned wedding on June 28, 1975 was almost prevented because shortly beforehand, in May, the groom was drafted by the army and had to go to Storkow, where he trained the entertainer Wolfgang “Lippi” Lippert, who is still well-known today. Only at the last moment was Rüdiger Schulz allowed to travel home for his wedding. The couple still keep the wine and champagne glasses presented by the army as a gift, as well as a coffee service, to this day.

Times were not always easy for Adelheid and Rüdiger Schulz: because her husband always worked a lot, first in Berlin, then also in Burg and Genthin, her wife, who worked as a hairdresser, was often alone with their three children Sandra, Markus and Katharina. But even when they were far apart, the couple always stuck together. To this day, everyone has their own activities, but they also do a lot of things together.

For example, the trip to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary: Rüdiger Schulz surprised his Adelheid with a stay at the “Neptun” hotel in Warnemünde and later went to Binz to see the Störtebecker Festival. But there was still time to celebrate in style – the whole family, including the three children and five grandchildren, came together at the Herrenkrug in Magdeburg. When all the festivities were over, Wolmirstedt’s mayor Marlies Cassuhn congratulated the couple on their 50th wedding anniversary and presented them with a gift, flowers and a certificate.
