Flames in the town hall: Fire brigade rehearses an emergency in a drill scenario
The Wolmirstedt fire department’s turntable ladder and other emergency vehicles as well as many active comrades could be seen at the town hall the other day. The scenario: a fire had broken out in the basement of the old town hall building for unknown reasons. Fortunately, however, the situation was only a mock fire. It was used by the volunteer firefighters for training purposes.
It was assumed that two cleaners were missing. After an intensive investigation of the situation, six breathing apparatus wearers entered the basement. With zero visibility, as the firefighters call it, they had to feel their way forward, find and rescue the missing persons and extinguish the fire (simulated by a disco fog machine). This challenge was mastered after around 20 minutes.
“Everyone was very satisfied at the end of the exercise. The procedures were implemented routinely and the casualties were rescued quickly. The fire safety officer has made a note of the findings that have been gathered for the continuous improvement of preventative fire safety in the town hall and will ensure that these are implemented quickly,” explained Yves Hummelt, spokesperson for the Wolmirstedt fire department. “Of course we hope that it never comes to an emergency, but if it does, we are as well prepared as possible,” he said.
The active members of the Wolmirstedt fire department always have a lot to do. They are not only called out to fires, but also to traffic accidents, door openings and other incidents. The voluntary work that the firefighters do in their free time also includes regular service evenings.
This refreshes what they have learned and teaches them new things so that the emergency services are always up to date and can work and help in the best possible way in an emergency. What they have learned is then put to use during emergency drills, as was recently the case in the town hall.
The town of Wolmirstedt would like to thank all the emergency services and members of its volunteer fire departments for their tireless work!
