Stolen eagle figure has been replaced

New eagle for war memorial at Wolmirstedt cemetery

In February 2022, there was a robbery at the Wolmirstedt cemetery: a cast bronze eagle figure that had been enthroned on the war memorial was stolen. The perpetrators could not be traced. However, the police suspect that the thieves may have wanted to sell the metal.

When the city council decided to replace the eagle in June 2024, it therefore followed a suggestion from the administration to procure an eagle made of cement-bonded artificial stone this time instead of one made of metal. This eagle was finally produced by restorer Oliver Guhr from Berlin.

The professional chose a washed-out golden color scheme to match the historical monument for the figure, which he placed on the war memorial on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. He received support from employees of the Henne company from Zielitz, who lifted the eagle into its new position using a special crane.

The town council hopes that the majestic animal will now watch over the war memorial for a long time to come and become a kind of new landmark for the cemetery. Incidentally, the Wolmirstedt eagle was the last one to be cast by restorer Oliver Guhr. “I have made around 20 eagles in my career. Now I’ve destroyed the mold. Even if I work for a few more years, I won’t be making any more eagles. This one was the last one,” explained the 65-year-old Berliner, referring to the Wolmirstedt eagle, which he will certainly remember particularly fondly.
