Wolmirstedt mixed choir celebrates 150th birthday
The Gemischte Chor Wolmirstedt e.V. celebrated an extraordinary anniversary. It has been around for 150 years. The choir has had a varied history: it was founded in June 1875 as a craftsmen’s choir and thus as an all-male choir. Women did not join until 1961, when the craftsmen’s choir and the women’s choir of the consumer cooperative merged. At the time, some men even wanted to prevent women from joining because they feared a loss of quality. From today’s perspective, it can be said that without the women, the choir would no longer exist, because unlike the three male members, they are clearly in the majority! Men are still needed in the mixed choir, as are young talent in general.
The mayor of Wolmirstedt, Mike Steffens, offered greetings on the occasion of the anniversary with a big choir festival and encouraged membership of the choir: “The musical commitment that you show here is not just about singing. It is a living community, it is cohesion, human closeness through music and it shapes the identity of our city,” he said.
The Wolmirstedt mixed choir rehearses in the community center and performs every year at the town festival and the Advent market. Music brings people together and the singers in this choir prove time and time again that singing together does just that!
