Elbeu youth club closed after fire

    Police assume arson

On the night of Friday, March 14, there was a fire in Elbeu. The youth club in the Wolmirstedt district was affected. According to the Wolmirstedt fire department, the fire broke out in the entrance area of the youth club at around 10 p.m. on Thursday and ate through the insulation into the roof area. The firefighting work lasted until the early hours of the morning, as the firefighters wanted to ensure that the fire could not reignite due to embers or heat build-up even after the flames had been extinguished.

The Elbeu youth club can no longer be used after the fire. It had only been extensively renovated last year, with new sanitary facilities, new heating systems, new interior fittings, a new exterior paint job and a new roof in the extension. While the town of Wolmirstedt provided the materials, young people and parents, among others, carried out much of the necessary work themselves.

The city council is now discussing ways to continue with a youth club in Elbeu. The young people who lost their meeting place as a result of the fire are always welcome at the youth club on Burgstrasse.

According to the Börde police station, the fire started from two garbage cans at the entrance. The police are now investigating on suspicion of arson. The damage to property is estimated at around 30,000 euros.

Firefighters from Wolmirstedt and all four local fire departments were deployed. A total of 45 firefighters with 8 vehicles were involved. It was already the 42nd operation for the Wolmirstedt fire department this year. Since January, there have been repeated fires in the town area that have been attributed to arson. Mayor Marlies Cassuhn therefore once again thanked the volunteer firefighters for their tireless efforts.
