Fact check on transport planning in Wolmirstedt

    Information for citizens

Traffic planning in Wolmirstedt and the construction of the bypass are key issues that affect many citizens. In order to create transparency and provide information on the current status of the plans, the town council has carried out comprehensive investigations and analyses. This takes into account both the impact on the traffic situation and wider issues such as the accessibility of certain areas of the city and noise protection measures.

This article summarizes the most important facts, explains the background to the plans and provides an overview of the next steps in the decision-making process. The aim is to inform citizens about the importance of the measures and the opportunities for participation as the process continues:

    • The construction of the bypass is not questioned by the administration.
    • It is factually correct that a traffic study was commissioned for a traffic policy decision with far-reaching significance for life in the city. The City Council passed the resolution on this at the meeting on 29.06.2023.
    • This means that the results must be noted and evaluated. The administration has prepared an information document for the city council meeting on 09.12.2024. The traffic study includes several variants of future traffic routing, which were evaluated according to individual criteria.
    • This information document is publicly accessible (see website of the City of Wolmirstedt/Council information system). Every citizen can take note of the content, including the annexes and the results of the traffic study.
    • As mayor, I see it as the administration’s duty not to look at the issue of the closure of the Bahnhofstraße level crossing in isolation, but also to address wider problems. These include the accessibility of the eastern areas of the city, in particular the Gartenstraße/Bodelschwingh-Haus area and the Glindenberg district. The most effective noise protection possible for all residents along the railroad line must also be discussed, as more and faster rail traffic also means more emissions. The construction of the bypass also means the downgrading of district roads in the urban area to municipal roads. This means that additional costs for the city are unavoidable.
    • After informing the city council, it is planned to reach a decision on a solution variant at the beginning of 2025 in order to legitimize further negotiations with DB. The participation of citizens will also be mandatory in the planning approval procedure at a later date.
    • Basically, it remains a DB project.
