Fire department’s retirement and honorary department celebrates its 25th birthday

The retirement and honorary department of the Wolmirstedt fire department, which is also the retirement and honorary department of the Barleben fire department, has been in existence for 25 years. A celebration was held to mark this special anniversary.

Several guests gave welcoming speeches at the 25th anniversary event. In addition to the head of the Wolmirstedt fire department, Yves Hummelt, and town fire chief Michael Langrock, they included Wolmirstedt’s mayor Mike Steffens. They all agreed that it is very fortunate to have such an active and sociable retirement and honorary department as that of the Wolmirstedt fire department.

According to Yves Hummelt, firefighting does not stop when you can no longer go on missions. “The family that has grown over the years lasts a lifetime,” said the head of the fire brigade. He emphasized that young and old alike can find their place in a modern fire department and that it is important to recognize and honour the volunteer commitment and the countless hours of free time invested in protecting fellow human beings even after the end of active service.

The Wolmirstedt fire department’s retirement and honorary department was founded in 2001 by fire brigade leaders Swen Pazina and Kurt Auerbach as a “leisure and senior citizens’ group”. Later, comrades from Mose, Barleben and Ebendorf also joined. Giesela Schulze has now been at the helm of the department for 14 years.
