Symbolic ground-breaking ceremony kicks off construction of new stadium in Wolmirstedt

A symbolic ground-breaking ceremony was held on Thursday, 22 May. Mayor of Wolmirstedt Marlies Cassuhn, Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister of the Interior and Sport Tamara Zieschang, Börde District Administrator Martin Stichnoth, Wolmirstedt City Council Chairman Felix Zietmann and – on behalf of the sports clubs – Martin Westphal from “SV Kali Wolmirstedt” as well as planner Axel Gehlhaar and Dirk Hummelt, Chairman of the Wolmirstedt City Council’s Construction and Economic Committee, kicked off the construction of a new stadium on the outskirts of Wolmirstedt.
The construction of this multifunctional sports facility with a large playing field, type B pitch and functional building represents the largest investment project in Wolmirstedt since 1990. As things stand, the project will cost around 10.5 million euros. Around 4.3 million euros of this will be financed by subsidies from the state of Saxony-Anhalt. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the administrators and decision-makers in the various ministries for their years of support, for their understanding, for always providing new answers to questions and for some crucial advice,” explained Mayor Marlies Cassuhn during a speech.
Saxony-Anhalt’s Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang also explained that the new stadium in Wolmirstedt is an important infrastructure project and expressed her appreciation that the town of Wolmirstedt is making this “very large investment” and daring to take this “big step”. Martin Stichnoth, District Administrator of the Börde district, even confirmed that the ground-breaking ceremony was the first for a new stadium in the huge district for many years.
“I would also like to thank all the administrative staff for their work. It was sometimes difficult to remain optimistic,” she said. Because the ground-breaking ceremony also marked the end of a phase of “lengthy and controversial discussions about the project, the location and the scope. The city council, administration and sportspeople have argued for a long time about what is necessary, feasible and affordable,” said Marlies Cassuhn. Once the new stadium has been built, the old stadium in Küchenhorn will be dismantled and the area renaturalized to restore its natural function and absorb water from the Ohre in the event of flooding.
The mayor recalled that this was precisely one of the arguments in favor of building a new stadium at a different location. It is only too understandable for her that, alongside the joy of a new stadium, there is also a sense of melancholy among athletes and citizens about the demolition of the Küchenhorn Stadium.
The sports clubs “Ohrekicker” and “SV Kali” will train in the new stadium near Samsweger Straße, and the outdoor sports facility will also be used by schools and daycare centers. Following the ground-breaking ceremony, archaeological work will now take place on the site, which is scheduled to last until October 2025. Construction of the sports field will start in March 2026. According to current plans, the functional building will be built from July 2026. Construction is expected to be completed in August 2027. The stadium is currently scheduled to be inaugurated on September 4, 2027.
“I am convinced that Wolmirstedt will become more attractive with this leisure facility and the citizens and athletes are looking forward to the opening day,” said Mayor Marlies Cassuhn.
