Manfred and Helga Wendland Celebrate Their Iron Wedding Anniversary
Helga and Manfred Wendland’s love story didn’t start with a bang: they simply lived in the same apartment building, which is how they got to know each other and eventually fell in love.
Their love continues to this day and is evident in small moments: for example, when Manfred Wendland prepares breakfast for his wife Helga every morning in their shared apartment at the DRK’s “Wohnquartier am Stadtpark” and gently wakes her up.
The couple married in 1961 and moved from Oschersleben to Wolmirstedt in 1971. “Because of work,” says Manfred Wendland, who worked underground in Zielitz until he retired. His wife, Helga, worked at the former district administration office in Wolmirstedt, where her duties included managing the mailroom. The couple had three children together—and the family now also includes three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Helga and Manfred Wendland celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary—the Iron Wedding—in a relaxed atmosphere over coffee and cake with family and friends. Wolmirstedt’s mayor, Mike Steffens, also personally congratulated them on this special anniversary, presenting them with a gift and a certificate from the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
