Golden City Taler for Wolfgang Meyer

Golden town taler of the town of Wolmirstedt for pedigree poultry breeder Wolfgang Meyer

Wolfgang Meyer received one of the city of Wolmirstedt’s highest honors at the most recent city council meeting on November 27, 2025. The Wolmirstedt resident has rendered outstanding services to the common good in the town, particularly in the breeding of pedigree poultry. For this reason, he was presented with the Wolmirstedt Golden City Thaler by Deputy Chairman of the City Council Fritz-Georg Meyer at the event. Jürgen Bednorz, Chairman of the poultry breeding association “Wolmirstedt und Umgebung vom Jahre 1909 e.V.”, gave a laudatory speech.

Wolfgang Meyer’s love of poultry farming began at the age of six. At that time, he received his first pigeons as a gift from his uncle and grandfather. They were of the “Wiener Hochflieger” breed. “Since then, I’ve never been without pigeons and have remained loyal to the Viennese to this day,” reports Wolfgang Meyer.

In 1959, the young man, who had come to Wolmirstedt from Upper Silesia, was drafted into the riot police in Magdeburg. From 1963 to 1966, when he was often accommodated in police schools, Wolfgang Meyer’s wife looked after his pigeons. “Without my wife, I would never have achieved the success I did in later years,” says the pedigree poultry breeder. In 1967, he joined the “Wolmirstedt und Umgebung” poultry breeding club. He is still active there today.

Wolfgang Meyer celebrated his first international success back in 1961 by winning a championship title. This was quickly followed by further successes. This led to the Wolmirstedt native being advised to qualify as a breeding judge. The examination was successful and he became a breeding judge in 1967, reports Wolfgang Meyer. In the same year, he was also elected breeding supervisor of the Special Association of Viennese and Budapest Bottlenose Dolphins. He still holds this position today.

Due to the great professional knowledge that Wolfgang Meyer acquired, he was often appointed as a judge internationally. He also ensured that three main special shows of Viennese and Budapest Tümmler were held in Wolmirstedt during the GDR era, making the town famous among breeders throughout the GDR and even beyond.

After the political change, the two special clubs from East and West merged, and Wolfgang Meyer was once again elected Breeding Director of the new, all-German association. In 1996, the Wolmirstedt native ensured that the 1st International Exhibition of Viennese and Budapest Bottlenose Dolphins took place in the Jahn Sports Hall, under the patronage of Mayor Dr. Zander. Exhibitors from several countries and visitors from all over the world, for example from Norway and England, were guests.

“This was followed by two more European shows, which unfortunately had to be held in Barleben, as there were no more suitable premises in Wolmirstedt to hold an exhibition of this size. Seven countries took part in these exhibitions. The furthest visitor came from Australia,” recalls Wolfgang Meyer. He is not only a good organizer of these major events, but has also always distinguished himself as an excellent breeder.

Together with his wife, he won 57 international and champion titles in the GDR alone. After reunification, he won 7 European Champion and European Champion titles, 48 German Champion and National Champion titles and, on top of that, special association championship titles. Wolfgang Meyer is still unbeaten in his field today. He has often been honored for this. Among other things, he is honorary chairman of various special associations, such as the special association of Viennese and Budapest porpoises and the local association 1909 in Wolmirstedt.

Wolfgang Meyer was also named Bundesehrenmeister – the highest honor of the Association of German Breed Poultry Breeders – and Meister der Deutschen Rassetaubenzucht – the highest honor of the Association of German Pigeon Breeders. He also became champion of Saxony-Anhalt’s pedigree poultry breeding and was also awarded the state’s breeder’s diploma. It was not until 2022 that Wolfgang Meyer was honored as the old master of Viennese and Budapest breeding.

Incidentally, the Wolmirstedt resident has not only been involved in poultry farming all these years. He was also a town councillor in Wolmirstedt for over 20 years and was also active in dog sports. There he won several titles with German shepherds.
